This 'diary' page is simply to
keep a record of media events and, in particular, the occasions when I
have been interviewed about my books. It serves little other function
... but I had to keep this stuff somewhere and this seemed a fairly
obvious place for it.
8th
October, 2002. BBC GMR Radio.
"Save Thousands Selling Your Own Home".
This was essentially a promotion for the book,
"Save Thousands Selling Your Own Home". Dianne Oxberry (BBC North West
regional TV's weather girl) conducted the interview and was one of the
friendliest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. The interview
went like a dream, but finished all too quickly.
8th
October, 2002. BBC Radio Derby. "Save Thousands Selling Your Own Home".
In complete contrast to the morning's interview on
GMR, this one was all a bit of set-up because I hadn't been told there
would be other studio guests, including a local estate agent and a
property 'house doctor', arguing their corner, bearing in mind the book
is all about selling property without an agent. The
discussion started to get quite heated between me and the estate agent
at one point. Thankfully, the interviewer, Shane O'Connor, intervened
to bring things back under control. I think I came out winning ... but
then I wasn't listening to it, so who can say.
16th
January, 2003. World of Wonder.
Completely out of the blue came a telephone call
from Nikki Cohen. She explained she was a production assistant for the
international television production company, World
of Wonder, and asked if I would consider taking part in a
'test' filming sequence, which would be submitted as a proposal to the
BBC as a new six part property docu-series. The programme was to be
based on my book, "Save Thousands Selling Your Own Home", where six
homeowners would attempt to sell their property without an estate
agent. The idea being that I act as a presenter-come-adviser.
Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity and off to London I went. After
hours of filming, World of Wonder were going to edit it down to just a
few minutes and then present it to the BBC for their consideration. It
was a fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable day and, even if nothing comes
of it, I wouldn't have missed the experience for the ... er ... world
(of wonder).
29th
April, 2003. BBC Radio Essex. "The Buy To Let Handbook".
A promotional interview for the new book, which was
released last month. Interviewer, Dave Monk, asked some excellent
questions and despite being planned for a duration of just ten minutes,
we chatted for twice as long.
9th
May, 2003. BBC Radio Nottingham. "Save
Thousands Selling Your Own Home".
A promotional interview, but timed to coincide with
the release of a damning Consumer Association report disclosing the
extent of estate agents' bad practice, for example, by flasifying
information to secure a sale. This information was used to full
advantage by the interviewer Alex Trelinski (and, of course, by myself
to encourage listeners to 'have a go' at selling their property
themselves).
15th
July, 2003. BBC Radio Kent. "The Buy To Let Handbook".
Another promotional interview, this time on Julie
Maddock's afternoon show on Radio Kent. Actually, Julie was having a
much more enjoyable time at the Queen's garden party at Buckingham
Palace, so stand-in presenter, Phil Harrison, conducted the interview,
which went very well.
16th
September,
2003. BBC Radio West
Midlands.
"Build
Your Own Home".
The first interview promoting the 'self-build' book
took place on The Late Show with Julie Mayer. This was interesting from
the point of view that Julie found the subject intriguing and was
herself contemplating a self-build project. The interview continued
longer than intended and covered most aspects.
10th
March,
2005.
BBC Radio 5
Live.
"Buying
-v- Renting".
Consulted by producer of Phil Williams' Sunday
night BBC Radio 5 Live show on the subject of whether it is now cheaper
to buy property than rent it. Invited to take part in the live
broadcast - but unable to do so due to other commitments.
25th February 2008. BBC2.
"Working Lunch".
I
was invited to take part in Working Lunch, BBC2's daily topical show
following the news on BBC1, as they were discussing the problems faced
by first time buyers whose situation had worsened with the announcement
that mortgages were to become more difficult to acquire and more
expensive.
28th March
2008. BBC TV. "New project consultation".
Had
discussions with Alexis Price at the BBC's Factual Entertainment
production division, over the BBC's proposals to create a new
television program about selling property. The initial concept is for
two teams to compete against each other, one team of estate agents
versus a team of owners acting under their own initiative, to see which
team would be able to sell a property the fastest. This project is in
its early stages - and time will tell if it developes into an actual
program. The BBC approached my publsiher to ask if I would be willing
to get involved, which of course I accepted and was delighted to help
with.
